Shock the Monkey (1982)
Peter Gabriel
Rating: 4.8
I have always loved this fascinatingly confusing song, even when I was younger. It's in turns wonderful and puzzling; according to Peter Gabriel himself, "Shock the Monkey" is "'a love song' that examines how jealousy can release one's baser instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings of jealousy."
This song, thankfully, is one of the main 1001; if it wasn't, I would have been shocked. Gabriel's voice is beautifully haunting, and everything else echoes this tone. This song is most definitely worth listening to, even if you already have.
