Barracuda (1977)
Heart
Rating: 4.9
This song, though well-known mostly for its opening bass and guitar riff, is purely beautiful on its own. The vocals are amazing, with great lyrics, especially during the bridge: "'Sell me, sell you,' the porpoise said/ Dive down deep down save my head, you/ I think that you got the blues too/ All that night and all the next/ Swam without looking back/ Made for the western pools/ Silly, silly fools."
I have loved this song for a long time, so I was dismayed to see that, for some reason, "Barracuda" wasn't one of the main 1001 songs. I honestly don't understand why; this is one of the best songs of all time, in my humbly honest opinion.

Praise You-Fatboy Slim
Praise You (1999)
Fatboy Slim
Rating: 3.6
I find "Praise You" almost impossible to rate; for one thing, no real singing is going on, but there is a repeated track of one...verse? chorus? that is consistently mixed and repeated.
Basically, this song is a mix of samples from other places used quite effectively to create a hit song that's hard to dislike or avoid. This is the first time I've listened to the complete five minute version from the album, and I'm not too impressed by it; I prefer the three minute version that was played on the radio all the time. It is still played quite often on my local radio station, and I can't help but listen.

Piece of My Heart-Big Brother & The Holding Company
Piece of My Heart (1968)
Big Brother & The Holding Company
Rating: 4.0
I don't really like Janis Joplin's voice, but somehow, it's exactly what this song needs. With a wonderfully smooth guitar part, "Piece of My Heart" almost begs for Joplin's harsh vocals, making this song even better. The pain described in the lyrics is apparent in her voice, especially in the chorus: "Take another little piece of my heart now, baby/ Break another little bit of my heart now, darling, yeah/ Have another little piece of my heart now, baby, yeah/ You know you got it if it makes you feel good."
The backup vocals are pretty good, but they pale in comparison to Joplin's pipes; the song focuses on her, and that could not be more clear.

Jolene-Dolly Parton
Jolene (1973)
Dolly Parton
Rating: 4.5
This is only the second time I have ever heard the song, the first time being a month ago. I really don't like country, and though I have had several people tell me that Dolly Parton was a horrible singer, I must go against my dislike of country music and say that I truly do like this song. There's just something about its beautifully desperate lyrics, especially in the opening: "Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/ I'm begging of you, please don't take my man/ Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene/ Please don't take him just because you can."
Though Parton's voice does carry a strong Southern accent, the hauntingly sad tone of the lyrics pierces me to the core, so much so that "Jolene" has become one of the few country songs I actually like. Well done, Dolly Parton, and well done to the editors of this book-this song is one of the main 1001.

Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N' Roses
Welcome to the Jungle (1987)
Guns N' Roses
Rating: 4.5
The only member of Guns N' Roses that I personally like is Slash. That aside, the lead singer really works his ass off in this song: his rough vocals are pushed to the limit over and over, forcing him to use several different techniques. It's hard not to admire him for the amount of skill he shows here. Also, Slash's guitar solo truly shines, as expected.
I was quite surprised when I saw that this song wasn't one of the main 1001. I think that this is their best song, though I know many would disagree. Nonetheless, "Welcome to the Jungle" is most certainly worth listening to.
"Jungle/ Welcome to the jungle, watch it bring you to your/ knees, knees/ In the jungle/ Welcome to the jungle/ Feel my, my/ my serpentine."

Crazy-Gnarls Barkley
Crazy (2006)
Gnarls Barkley
Rating: 4.7
As overplayed as this song was, Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" is a wonderful, well-written song with clever lyrics and a strong backbeat. I never grew tired of this song, and I still enjoy listening to it whenever it show up on the radio.
Cee-Lo Green certainly knows how to use his voice to its best advantage; in most situations, I would find a voice like his to be annoying, but he manages to make it work for him perfectly here. Everything else about this song is equally amazing, and its spot amongst the main 1001 is deserved on all accounts.

SOS-Rihanna
SOS (2006)
Rihanna
Rating: 3.6
Out of all of Rihanna's singles that I have heard, I don't find "SOS" to be very strong. With some of the background sampled from Soft Cell's "Tainted Love", and with random clapping sounds, the backbeat isn't extremely strong. Also: though Rihanna's vocals are as beautiful and strong as ever, this song doesn't really show off very much of her range or her vocal skill.
Though the chorus is extremely catchy, I find myself more annoyed than glad when this song is stuck in my head. If you haven't heard this song before, you're not really missing out on too much.

Genie in a Bottle-Christina Aguilera
Genie in a Bottle (1999)
Christina Aguilera
Rating: 4.2
A blatantly sexual song, I still find "Genie in a Bottle" to be a perfect guilty pleasure: catchy, obviously a pop song, with little real substance behind the lyrics. Even now, Christina has the talent to pump out such classics, though they're becoming slightly more mature (though not by much).
This song was pretty important to the 90's, and I don't think I could imagine how things would have been without this song. Though her musical style was somewhat similar to that of Britney Spears, her vocals were (and still are) strong and enchanting; any background accompaniment that isn't vocal is almost rendered unnecessary, as she steals all of the listener's attention.

Shock the Monkey-Peter Gabriel
Shock the Monkey (1982)
Peter Gabriel
Rating: 4.8
I have always loved this fascinatingly confusing song, even when I was younger. It's in turns wonderful and puzzling; according to Peter Gabriel himself, "Shock the Monkey" is "'a love song' that examines how jealousy can release one's baser instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings of jealousy."
This song, thankfully, is one of the main 1001; if it wasn't, I would have been shocked. Gabriel's voice is beautifully haunting, and everything else echoes this tone. This song is most definitely worth listening to, even if you already have.

Crazy-Seal
Crazy (1990)
Seal
Rating: 3.9
Though Seal might be more well-known now as Heidi Klum's husband, he was a really good singer back in his day, and "Crazy" is the perfect example of that. With an interesting flow, and an almost calm feel, this song manages to enchant, even with the slightly off-kilter vocals from Seal.
There's something about this song that makes me want to listen to it over and over again, even though I feel tempted to change the song as well, but maybe that's just a part of its magic. This song is indeed part of the main 1001.

Rock You Like a Hurricane (1984)
Scorpions
Rating: 3.8
This song has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I'm not a huge Scorpions fan-I only like one other song by them, which I shall review later-but this song is still able to hit all the right notes. Nonetheless, I find something rather wanting here. I'm not sure what it is; maybe I find it slightly overplayed, or the raw vocals are too much for me.
However, the lyrics are good, and the guitar and drums even better. If you've never played Guitar Hero, or you don't watch music channels on TV very often, perhaps this song won't interest you as much, but it's worth hearing at least once.

Mercy-Duffy
Mercy (2008)
Duffy
Rating: 3.9
Honestly, I didn't know that Duffy was Welsh, did you? Her voice always carried a slight Southern twang, in my opinion, but we'll put that aside.
I remember disliking this song the first time I heard it, but Duffy's voice has grown on me over time. Even so, her slightly harsh vocals can grate on me sometimes, but everything else-the guitar, the backup vocals-blend together to make this a beautifully well-written song.

Black Horse and the Cherry Tree-KT Tunstall
Black Horse and the Cherry Tree (2005)
KT Tunstall
Rating: 4.5
KT Tunstall, a Scottish singer, really shows off her vocal strength in "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree". With wonderful guitar lines, great backup vocals, and a subtle drum beat, this song went to the top of the charts in several countries. The lyrics are clever and intelligent, and Tunstall's delivery is spot-on.
I have heard a few other songs by Tunstall, but they never managed to impress me as much as this one. If you haven't heard it before, I suggest you do so as soon as possible.

Crabbuckit-k-os
Crabbuckit (2004)
k-os
Rating: 4.0
This is a good song by a Canadian band whom I haven't heard much from in years. It has a nice beat, with a good rap and a catchy chorus, but I find that I can only enjoy this song every once in a while-my iPod wouldn't be forced to repeat this song very often.
Honestly, the chorus has very little to do with the overall song-"No time to get down 'cause I'm moving up/ Check out the crabs in the bucket"-but that makes this song more fun and enjoyable. If you ever feel the need to get up and dance, give this song a listen.

I Love a Man in a Uniform-Gang of Four
I Love a Man in a Uniform (1982)
Gang of Four
Rating: 4.1
"The girls, they love to see you shoot." Who can argue with that sort of logic? This song is full of wonderful lyrics such as this ("To have ambition was my ambition"), and the vocals and magnificent, with a simple guitar riff that helps carry the song.
This song was banned by the BBC during the Falklands War; nevertheless, it hit the UK singles chart, and it was popular in the United States as well. The only real problem I have with this song is that it doesn't seem sure about when it should end, so it drags on for longer than it really should. Otherwise, this is a good song from a good band.

Mack the Knife-Bobby Darin
Mack the Knife (1959)
Bobby Darin
Rating: 5.0
I originally heard Kevin Spacey's version of this song from the movie in which he portrays Bobby Darin, and I am pleased to say that the original is even better than Spacey's-and his was amazing.
Darin has purely gorgeous vocals, and there's no way he could fail with this well-written song. The book (for once, getting it right) made this one of the main 1001 songs, and I agree wholeheartedly; the jazz band accompanying Darin's vocals is amazing, and the final swell is genius. There's not much I can say besides this: go listen to the song, and I think you'll be able to figure out why I gave it a 5.

Son of a Preacher Man-Dusty Springfield
Son of a Preacher Man (1968)
Dusty Springfield
Rating: 4.2
Before you ask: yes, I have seen Pulp Fiction, but I had heard this song long before I viewed that film. I'm not a huge fan of Dusty Springfield, but her soulful vocals fit the lyrics perfectly, and I enjoy the lyrics in all of their sweet innocence.
I don't think she needed the backup vocalists; they ruin some of her best moments in the song, especially near the end, when they randomly jump to a high note that seems out of place. Nonetheless, this song is a wonderful classic from the 60's, and it's worth listening to.

What Goes Around...Comes Around (2007)
Justin Timberlake
Rating: 4.7
Justin Timberlake is a great singer. Even as he ventures further into the movie business, there is no way that he will stay away from his greatest strength for long. There's a reason why his singles keep reaching Billboard's number one spot: his vocals are pure gold.
Though this song checks in at seven minutes and thirty seconds, none of it is boring or unnecessary; he uses all the space to tell his song's story. Though the music video may have overshadowed the song itself slightly, visuals aren't needed to admire this song for what it truly is: a masterpiece.

Steppenwolf
Rating: 3.5
I have recently been listening to covers of this song, but this is the first time in years that I've heard the original, and I'm not sure that I like it too much. Though the instrumental is great, the vocals are too harsh and heavy for me to truly enjoy both them and the lyrics as well.
The chorus is simple, and the guitar part fits in well; the drummer is great as well. This song is pretty popular as a cover choice, and an excellent acapella version of it was done on the TV show The Sing-Off. Perhaps if a different singer was at the head of this, I would like it more, but I just can't bring myself to it.

Their songs are just so catchy and upbeat, and their slightly raw vocals intrigue me; each member weaves their thread in with the others, creating an admirable blend. Let Me Blow Ya Mind-Eve (featuring Gwen Stefani)
Let Me Blow Ya Mind (2001)
Eve (featuring Gwen Stefani)
Rating: 3.8
With a simple rap, and Gwen Stefani's vocals carrying the chorus, this song is pretty good. However, there's something that prevents me from giving this a higher rating, and it could be the speed of the song-which, oddly enough, is one of the reasons why I like it. Though the speed fits the lyrics and the overall mood, I almost wish I could hear it slightly faster so I could see if I like it more.
Eve has faded into the background over time, which is disappointing-this single promised the potential for more. Gwen Stefani, after exhausting a solo career, has turned to fashion and perfume-and is doing quite well, too. These two singers did come together for "Rich Girl", but I prefer "Let Me Blow Ya Mind".

Who Will Save Your Soul-Jewel
Who Will Save Your Soul (1996)
Jewel
Rating: 4.8
I remember seeing an interview with Jewel while I was flipping through the TV channels, and she commented about how she thought she sounded like Kermit when she sang the line "Who will save your soul?" I disagree; something about the tone sounds desperate, almost worried, as if she's begging the listener to pay attention to her lyrics, which fits this song perfectly.
It took me a while to rate this song, for it's almost too beautiful to confine to a rating system. I really love Jewel's vocals, and even though my favorite song by her ("You Were Meant for Me") isn't in the book at all, I'm glad that this was (but it's not a part of the main 1001).

Yeah! (2004)
Usher (featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris)
Rating: 4.6
I must admit: I love this song. It's been a guilty pleasure of mine for years, not because of Usher's vocals (which are great), but because of Ludacris' rap. I'm not a rap fan at all, but there's something about this one that I can't help but like.
With a consistent beat, the story that Usher's lyrics contain is carried across well, and this becomes a perfect dance song. I'm not sure that Lil Jon was necessary to the flow of the song, but that's a different matter. This is worth giving a listen, even if you aren't particularly a fan of any of the artists, or even the genre; "Yeah!" just might convert you.

I'm not sure that Lil Jon was necessary to the flow of the song, but that's a different matter. This is worth giving a listen, even if you aren't particularly a fan of any of the artists, or even the genre; "Yeah!" just might convert you.
(Side note-this isn't one of the main 1001.)
About a Girl-Nirvana
About a Girl (1989)
Nirvana
Rating: 4.4
(Note: I listened to the version from Nirvana's album, Bleach, not the unplugged version from 1994.)
A well-paced, grungy song-sounds like an apt description of most of Nirvana's catalogue. However, there's something about this one in particular that just gives me pause. I do admire Nirvana, but though "About a Girl" isn't from Nevermind, I find it to be one of my favorites. The simple lyrics alone are worth hearing, especially the chorus: "I'll take advantage while/ You hang me out to dry/ But I can't see you every night/ free."
With repetitive bass and guitar lines (until the instrumental break, of course), the listener is almost forced to bask in the harsh light of Cobain's vocals. I find the experience of listening to this song thoroughly enjoyable.

Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)-Squeeze
Pulling Mussels (From the Shell) (1980)
Squeeze
Rating: 4.2
I didn't know this, but "pulling mussels" is British slang for having sex. That aside, this song is pretty good, with interesting lyrics-see the chorus ("Look behind the Chalet/ My holiday's complete/ And I feel like William Tell/ Maid Marian on her tiptoed feet/ Pulling mussels from a shell").
The guitar parts are wonderful, and the piano solo in the instrumental section is quite jazzy and fun.The vocals are strong, but not amazing; the real fascination, as I mentioned before, is the lyrics. I hadn't listened to this song in a while, but I can understand how the tune used to get stuck in my head: it's rather catchy, and it has the potential to cheer you up when you're down.

Purple Haze-Jimi Hendrix Experience
Purple Haze (1967)
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Rating: 4.3
"Purple Haze" is one of the most well-known rock songs of all time, and Jimi Hendrix is a guitar master. Everyone can identify the opening riff, and the lyric confusion ("Excuse me while I kiss the sky") just made the song more popular and interesting. What if it was really "Excuse me while I kiss this guy"? Did it really matter? The song is well done, with a harsh and haunting vocal by Hendrix.
Though this isn't my favorite Jimi Hendrix song, it is indeed worthy of its place in the main 1001, and if you have never listened to it, then you are missing out.

Fallin'-Alicia Keys
Fallin' (2001)
Alicia Keys
Rating: 4.9
Alicia Keys has a beautiful voice that never ceases to enchant me. I fell in love with this song as soon as I heard it, and I find it almost impossible to grow tired of. With an inspired vocal hook, the song's beginning is marvelous, and the chorus is even better: "I keep on fallin' in and out/ of love with you/ I never loved someone/ the way that I love you." The bridge is extremely well done, and the only problem is that the song has to end.
Thankfully, the book made the correct decision, and made this one of the main 1001 songs. Though Alicia Keys continues to make amazing records, I will never forget the beauty of "Fallin'".
