About a Girl (1989)
Nirvana
Rating: 4.4
(Note: I listened to the version from Nirvana's album, Bleach, not the unplugged version from 1994.)
A well-paced, grungy song-sounds like an apt description of most of Nirvana's catalogue. However, there's something about this one in particular that just gives me pause. I do admire Nirvana, but though "About a Girl" isn't from Nevermind, I find it to be one of my favorites. The simple lyrics alone are worth hearing, especially the chorus: "I'll take advantage while/ You hang me out to dry/ But I can't see you every night/ free."
With repetitive bass and guitar lines (until the instrumental break, of course), the listener is almost forced to bask in the harsh light of Cobain's vocals. I find the experience of listening to this song thoroughly enjoyable.
(Side note: not one of the main 1001)
