Criminal (1997)
Fiona Apple
Rating: 4.9
This is the only song I've ever heard by Fiona Apple, and I'm truly captivated by it. Her voice is so haunting, carrying the weight of her lyrics straight to your heart. This is one of the times when I gladly agree with the editors; "Criminal" is one of the main 1001.
I love the entire song (except how long it takes to end-the instruments drag on for a while), but I love the chorus the most: "What I need is a good defense/'Cause I'm feeling like a criminal/And I need to be redeemed to the one I've sinned against/Because he's all I ever knew of love."
Though most of the attention is directed towards the music video for this song, I recommend avoiding it, as it takes away from the beauty of the song itself. "Criminal" is definitely worth listening to if you've never heard it before; it's also worth reevaluating if you think you don't like it.
